12 Academicians Lecture One General Elective Course for Undergraduates of Nankai University

What is it like to take an undergraduate general elective course lectured by 12 academicians?

On March 18, Cao Xuetao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Nankai University, delivered the lecture of "Frontiers and Challenges of Biomedical Research" in a way of combination of online and offline, which marked the beginning of "Frontiers and Challenges of Medicine", a general elective course launched by School of Medicine, Nankai University.

From "Biomedical Research Objectives, Characteristics and Frontier Hot Spots" to "Biomedical and Modern Science and Technology", and then to "Key Progress and Breakthrough of Modern Biomedical Research"… and from macro to micro dimensions, Cao Xuetao gave a detailed and vivid lecture on the development trend, challenges and future research directions of biomedicine by citing a large number of examples, which attracted 14,000 online participants.

The biomedical field is the strategic commanding height of the new global scientific and technological revolution. With the all-round promotion of the "Healthy China 2030" strategy, the popularization of medical knowledge and the training of medical talents have become increasingly important and urgent.

Focusing on the global frontier trend of biomedicine, the School of Medicine opened "Frontiers and Challenges of Medicine", a general elective course lectured by 12 academicians. This course, led by Cao Xuetao, is open to undergraduates of Nankai University and Tianjin Medical University, aiming at setting a top-level course of medicine in China.

In the follow-up courses, 11 top experts and academicians in China will explain medical science knowledge with straightaway examples based on their working experience, and teach young students new ideas and cutting-edge technologies in the field of medicine, as well as opportunities and challenges in the development of biomedicine, including Zhong Nanshan, an expert in respiratory medicine and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Chen Kaixian, an expert in pharmacy and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Shi Yigong, an expert in structural biology and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences;  Li Lanjuan, an expert in lemology and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Ge Junbo, an expert in cardiology and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Jiang Hualiang, an expert in pharmacology and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Cheng Jing, an expert in bioengineering and medical devices and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Zhao Yimin, an expert in stomatology and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The course covers many frontiers of medicine and provides students with a valuable opportunity to communicate with masters face to face.
